Republican presidential nominee John McCain (left) stands with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama following their… debate… Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain made bullish victory claims Saturday as the dust settled from a feisty first presidential debate clash, in the shadow of the grave Wall Street crisis.

Both camps rolled out fast-moving political spin operations in the always important contest to cement conventional wisdom about who won and lost Friday night’s encounter at the University of Mississippi.

While the spin doctors battled, many commentators coalesced behind the view that neither McCain 72, nor Obama, 47, landed a decisive blow or committed a major gaffe, a verdict that benefits Obama given his slim lead in the polls.

The Obama camp said their man met the threshold of voters looking for a commander in chief and said he matched his rival on foreign policy — the Arizona senator’s area of greatest expertise.

McCain’s campaign however claimed to have drawn blood from their man’s repeated insistence that Obama, 47, was naive and inexperienced, and simply did not appreciate the grave threats to US security.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said on a conference call with reporters that the debate was “another piece of a puzzle in winning the election on November 4.”

Obama released a new political advertisement hammering McCain as out of touch with the economic woes of everyday Americans, as US lawmakers made fresh efforts to agree a 700-billion-dollar Wall Street bailout plan.

“Number of minutes in debate? 90. Number of times John McCain mentioned the middle class? Zero. John McCain doesn’t get it. Barack Obama does,” the ad’s narrator said.

McCain’s team however countered that the Democrat came across as aloof and inexperienced, while the Republican empathised with his audience.

“I think he connected on a very personal level with the American people, something that Obama has had a very difficult time doing,” McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said on MSNBC.

McCain was back in Washington on Saturday, after flying home straight from the debate to join intense negotiations on the Wall Street bailout, as members of Congress try to seal a deal before the financial markets open on Monday.

His rival was due to campaign in North Carolina and Virginia, with his running mate Joseph Biden, who will feature in the next big event of the campaign, a vice presidential debate with Republican Sarah Palin on Sunday.

Obama, vying to make history as the first African-American US president, branded McCain as an inheritor of President George W. Bush’s unpopular legacy of “failed” economic and foreign policies.

McCain presented himself as a reformer and posed as a superior potential commander-in-chief, repeatedly saying Obama did not “understand” foreign policy threats or was “naive” in his outlook to the world.

“I don’t think I need any on-the-job training. I’m ready to go at it right now,” McCain said.

An instant telephone poll by CNN and Opinion Research Corp. scored a decisive win for Obama among 524 debate watchers. Asked who did the better job, 51 percent said Obama and 38 percent said McCain.

The Democrat had a yawning lead of 58-37 percent on handling the economy, and a narrower edge of 52-47 percent on the Iraq war, the pollsters said.

Another snap poll by CBS News and Knowledge Networks of about 500 uncommitted voters had 39 percent saying Obama was the winner against 24 percent for McCain. A total of 37 percent said it was a draw.

The Wall Street Journal said in an editorial that the encounter largely followed the script and offered no surprises.

“Neither candidate broke from talking points, neither one made a gaffe, and both men won on the grounds where they are most comfortable.”

Obama said in the debate the financial crisis was “the final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by George Bush, supported by Senator McCain.”

McCain said Obama has “the most liberal voting record in the Senate. It’s hard to reach across the aisle from that far left,” he said.

The candidates also feuded over policy on Pakistan, Iraq, Iran and Russia, with McCain branding Obama naive and the Illinois senator portraying his rival as dangerously hawkish.

The Republican had only agreed to take part about 10 hours before the debate, after calling for it to be delayed over the finance crisis, a move Democrats branded as a stunt by a desperate campaign.

Obama and McCain hold the second debate in two weeks.

Astronaut Zhai Zhigang became the first Chinese man to walk in space on Saturday, clambering out of China’s Shenzhou VII spacecraft in a technological feat that Beijing wants the world to marvel at.

“I’m feeling quite well. I greet the Chinese people and the people of the world,” Zhai said as he climbed out of the craft, his historic achievement carried live on state television.

Zhai, the 41-year-old son of a snack-seller, unveiled a small Chinese flag, helped by colleague Liu Boming, who also briefly popped his head out of the capsule.

Zhai re-entered the spacecraft safely after a walk of about 15 minutes, marking the high point of China’s third manned space flight, which has received blanket media coverage.

He wore a $4.4 million Chinese-made suit weighing 120 kg (265lb). Liu wore a Russian-made suit and acted as a back-up.

Zhai, tethered to the ship, slowly made his way toward a chunk of solid lubricant outside the capsule, took a sample and handed it to Liu, the official Xinhua news agency said, in an experiment aimed at improving the durability of the materials.

The crew later launched a small satellite to take the first full images of the spacecraft from the outside.

Shenzhou VII, which took off on Thursday, is due to land on Sunday at around 5 p.m (0900 GMT), said mission spokesman Wang Zhaoyao.

President Hu Jintao spoke to the astronauts on their return to the capsule, congratulating them on their efforts and wishing them a “triumphant” return.

“You’ve done a great job,” Hu said.

Zhai, apparently reading from a prepared script, thanked Hu. “The space walk mission has been accomplished smoothly. Please set your mind at ease, Chairman Hu and the people of China,” Zhai said.

“In the vastness of space, I felt proud of our motherland.”

The risky space walk was a step toward China’s longer-term goal of assembling a space lab and then a larger space station.

The fast-growing Asian power wants to be sure of a say in the future use of space and its resources.

Chinese Communist Party leaders, also celebrating the mission, hailing the country’s achievements in a year in which Beijing has staged a successful Olympics and coped with a devastating earthquake in Sichuan in May.

“UPBEAT NOTE”

A Xinhua commentary praised the mission as adding “an upbeat note to an eventful year” — references to events such as the earthquake.

“(The space mission) is seen as another source of pride and joy for the people after the Olympics.”

But Xinhua also said that China remained far behind the two leading space powers, Russia and the United States. “Compared with these countries, China is still a latecomer and is only taking its starting steps,” it said.

Xinhua said millions tuned in to watch the event on television, some on large outdoor screens.

“It’s worth the money. It shows our country is getting stronger, and other countries will not dare bully us,” said civil servant Jiang Guishan, watching along with hundreds of others in Beijing’s fashionable Wangfujing shopping district.

“We have encountered a lot of difficulties, but we will not be defeated when faced with them, and will only overcome the obstacles and be strong. Now this is a great example,” added travel agent Wu Qixin.

China’s space programme has come a long way since late leader Mao Zedong, founder of Communist China in 1949, lamented that the country could not even launch a potato into space.

China’s first manned spaceflight was in 2003, followed by a two-man flight in 2005. The only other countries that have sent people into space are Russia and the United States.

Legendary film star Paul Newman, whose brilliant blue eyes, good looks and talent made him one of Hollywood’s top actors over six decades has died at age 83 after a long battle with cancer.

Newman died on Friday night at his farmhouse near Westport, Connecticut, said his Los Angeles-based spokesman Jeff Sanderson.

“His death was as private and discreet as the way he had lived his life, a humble artist who never thought of himself as ‘big,’ surrounded by his beloved family and the close circle of friends,” said a statement released by his family on Saturday.

Paul Leonard Newman, known as “PL” to his friends, appeared in more than 50 movies, including “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “The Hustler,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting.” He earned nine Oscar nominations for acting and won the best actor honor for 1986’s “The Color of Money.”

Famed for his philanthropy as well as his acting, Newman was married to Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward for more than 50 years. He had successful side careers as a race car driver and creator of a line of food products, Newman’s Own, that bore his name and face on their labels.

His Newman’s Own Foundation gave more than $250 million to thousands of charities worldwide and his Hole-in-the-Wall Camps provided summer breaks for children with serious illnesses.

“Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special. Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity,” his five daughters said in a statement.

“Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words: ‘It’s been a privilege to be here,’” they said.

HOLLYWOOD LEGEND

Newman was born in a Cleveland suburb on January 26, 1925, and was a Navy radio man in the Pacific during World War Two. Afterward, he went to Kenyon College in Ohio on a football scholarship but took up acting after being cut from the team because of a barroom brawl.

After his father’s death, Newman helped run the family sporting goods store before heading to the Yale Drama School.

He ended up in New York, finding bit parts on TV and a Broadway role in “Picnic” in 1953. His first major movie role was portraying boxer Rocky Graziano in “Somebody Up There Likes Me.” From there, his career was on the rise.

In 1958, Newman starred in “The Long Hot Summer” with Woodward, who he married that year shortly after divorcing his first wife, Jacqueline Witte.

He also played an alcoholic loser in “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof,” opposite Elizabeth Taylor and the pool shark Fast Eddie Felson in “The Hustler.” Then came hits like “Hud,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” a 1969 Western pairing him with Robert Redford. The two also teamed up as con men in the 1973 movie “The Sting.”

Newman was also recognized for his work behind the camera, earning an Oscar nomination for best picture and a Golden Globe award for best director for “Rachel, Rachel,” which he produced and directed, and which starred Woodward.

Though his movie career slowed in later years, Newman picked up Oscar nominations in 1994 for drama “Nobody’s Fool” and again in 2002 for the crime thriller “Road to Perdition.”

He returned to the stage the same year in “Our Town” for Connecticut-based Westport County Playhouse. The show moved to Broadway and Newman was nominated for a Tony award for his performance and won and Emmy for the 2003 broadcast of the show on PBS.

In 2005 he won another Emmy, U.S. television’s highest award, for best supporting actor in the HBO mini-series “Empire Falls.” His last movie part was a voice-over role in the 2006 animated film “Cars.”

OUTSIDE THE LIMELIGHT

Throughout his career, Newman resisted the glare of Hollywood’s spotlight. He said once that his profession had “nothing to do with being an adult” and he bristled at the attention to his blue eyes, which happened to be color blind.

His long marriage to Woodward ran counter to Hollywood convention, where fast weddings and quick divorces seem to be the standard, and the pair lived in a 200-year-old Connecticut house, far from the heart of the entertainment industry.

Asked the secret of his marriage, Newman once said: “I know this is going to sound corny but there’s no reason to roam. I have steak at home. Why should I go out for a hamburger?”

As an auto racer, he came second in the Le Mans 24-hour competition in 1975 and in 1995 at age 70, he became the oldest driver on a winning team at the 24 hours of Daytona race.

But Newman said he got his deepest satisfaction from philanthropy. He used his influence to advance many social causes, and sometimes worked in the political arena. He was a delegate to the U.N. conference on disarmament in 1978.

Particularly close to his heart were the Hole-in-the-Wall Camps where children with life-threatening illnesses can find inspiration and sometimes even recovery or remission from their sicknesses. Today, there are eleven camps around the world, that have helped over 135,000 children, free of charge.

Newman is survived by Woodward, five daughters, two grandsons, and his older brother, Arthur. Newman also had a son Scott, who died in 1978
